Therapeutic Massage

Massage therapy involves the skilled manipulation of soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, tendons, and skin, to support recovery and overall wellbeing.

Therapeutic massage is highly targeted and goal-oriented, focusing on specific problem areas, such as a painful or tight back, rather than treating the whole body more generally. This focused approach allows for more effective relief where it is needed most.

A range of proven techniques may be used, including:
-
Myofascial release
-
Muscle energy techniques
-
Trigger point therapy
-
Swedish massage techniques

The primary aim of therapeutic massage is to reduce muscle tension, ease stiffness, and address chronic tightness or adhesions, helping to restore movement, relieve discomfort, and improve function.

Please note: Therapeutic massage is based on Swedish Massage techniques, it is not based on sports massage.

Why should you have Therapeutic Massage from a Physiotherapy Clinic?

Therapeutic massage is a specialised treatment that differs significantly from spa or beauty massage. As part of an integrative approach to care, it complements conventional medical treatments by addressing both physical symptoms and overall wellbeing. Our focus is on treating you as a whole person, not just a specific condition or injury, supporting lasting results rather than short-term relief.

Body + Mind = Wellbeing

In physiotherapy settings, therapeutic massage is often used alongside standard treatments because of its strong clinical value. All physiotherapists are trained in core massage techniques, with many undertaking additional postgraduate training to deliver more advanced, targeted care. This combined approach enhances outcomes and supports a more effective, holistic recovery.

What to expect during an appointment

At the start of your initial consultation, you will be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire. This will be followed by a focused physical assessment to identify key areas for treatment. Based on this, your therapist will develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your individual needs, goals, and preferences.

For therapeutic massage, you will be asked to partially undress. You will be given privacy to prepare, along with towels and sheets to ensure your comfort and dignity at all times. During treatment, you will rest either face down or face up on a treatment couch while a range of techniques are applied. Additional support, such as pillows and towels, will be used to maximise your comfort, and your therapist will regularly check in to ensure the pressure and techniques are appropriate for you.

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy changing before and after your session, and that can also accommodate light stretching exercises if these are included in your treatment plan.
How long are sessions?
We offer either 45-minute appointments or 1-hour appointments for therapeutic massage.
-
45-minute appointments - for one main condition/problem area.
-
1-hour appointments - ideal if you have multiple areas of concern or would benefit from a comprehensive, long-term management plan. These sessions allow time to fully address your symptoms and include a bespoke exercise programme tailored to your needs. Any prescribed exercises will be clearly demonstrated and practised during the session to ensure confident and correct technique. You will also receive a structured programme, complete with easy-to-follow videos and images for each exercise, helping you stay consistent and achieve lasting results.
How many session will I need?

Recent conditions or issues can often improve within just a few sessions. For more longstanding or complex pain problems, a structured course of treatment may be recommended to achieve the best results. This will be fully discussed with you during your initial appointment, ensuring a clear and tailored plan from the outset.
