Breathing Exercises to Reduce Stress

We can all relate to a feeling of increased stress, whether in the past or something you are experiencing now.  During these times it can feel more difficult to relax and unwind.

Stress and anxiety can affect our entire body, causing ‘stress hormones’ to be released.  These hormones can have a wide range of effects such as the ones listed below:

  • Make muscles feel more tense

  • Increase heart rate

  • Cause breathing to become faster and shallower

  • Increase blood pressure

  • Suppress the immune system

  • Reduce energy levels

  • Disturb sleep

  • Exacerbate pain conditions

Deep breathing can reduce these stress hormones and their side-effects, promoting relaxation.
