Exercising During Pregnancy

Exercising during pregnancy can come with a multitude of benefits ranging from improved sleep and mood to a reduced risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and pre-eclampsia. Exercise can take on many forms, from a simple walk to swimming or aqua-natal classes, yoga/Pilates, or housework. You can even continue with running, weight-lifting and aerobic classes if you were doing these pre-pregnancy (though don’t start these latter activities if you were not previously doing them).

How much:

  • At least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week.

  • OR at least 75 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week.

  • OR an equivalent combination of the two.

Exercise to avoid:

  • High-impact sport or vigorous racquet sports

  • Scuba diving

  • Exercise over 2500m above sea level

Check out the below leaflet for more information on the benefits of exercise during pregnancy, ideas for what types of exercise to try, how to judge the intensity of your exercise, and when not to exercise.

Whilst exercise is safe for most women during pregnancy, there are certain conditions which require further advice/guidance. Please read the above leaflet for a list of these conditions and speak to your doctor or midwife prior to exercising should you either have any concerns or any of these conditions.

Key Message:

For many women, exercising during pregnancy is both safe and beneficial. You can exercise moderately or vigorously (feeling short of breath but can still speak a sentence) but remember to listen to your body and consult your doctor or midwife should you have any concerns.
