Sleeping Positions for Back Pain

We have all had a bad night’s sleep at some point in our lives.  When you do not get enough sleep, it is normal find yourself feeling irritable, grumpy or short-tempered.  If you are experiencing pain as well, lack of sleep can exacerbate your pain and make your symptoms harder to cope with.  This can be made even worse if your pain is cause of your disturbed night.


Check out the below picture on sleeping positions for back pain.  Sometimes the addition of a pillow or two can make sleeping more comfortable.

  • Side-sleeping: place a pillow or two between your legs to keep your top leg lifted to hip height.

  • Front sleeping: place one or two pillows under your middle to curve your back a little.  Sleeping with your back in an extension position can make you feel very stiff when you wake up, the pillow should prevent this.

  • Back sleeping: place a pillow or two under your knees.  This will prevent your back arching into an uncomfortable position.

Getting adequate sleep is the most important thing.  It does not matter what position you manage to sleep in, as long as it is comfortable.  Try using pillows to make your position more comfortable.
