Understanding Chronic Pain

Understanding Chronic Pain

Chronic or long-term pain (pain that lasts for more than three months) can impact every area of your life (see our Cycle of Chronic Pain blog).  Chronic pain conditions can be complex and difficult to manage, leading to feelings of anger and frustration.  Over time your ability to participate in activities or normal daily tasks can gradually reduce.  So how can we stop this progression and improve your symptoms?

Pain is a multifaceted sensation.  No two people will ever experience pain in the same way.  Your experience of pain is affected by the complex relationship between biological factors (your body), psychological factors (your mind, emotions, feelings) and social factors (your environment both past and present).  Understanding how these components can influence your pain plays a significant role in the successful management of chronic pain.

Click on the picture below to open an information sheet on understanding chronic pain. Take a few minutes to read this to see how all these components can directly affect your pain.
Managing pain is not a simple or quick process, but it can lead to significant improvements in your quality of life.  Physiotherapy can help guide you through this journey of understanding and the development of successful management strategies.
