Back Care with Babies

Back Care with Babies

New Mums are particularly vulnerable to developing back pain when looking after a new baby. Whether you underwent a natural delivery of a caesarean section, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to multiple months for your abdominal and pelvic girdle muscles to recover their strength. Owing to this weakness, repeated lifting, holding, and carrying can sometimes lead to debilitating back pain.

Check out the below leaflet for advice on how to look after your back whilst caring for and lifting your baby.
Key Message:

Maintaining good spinal posture is important for new mums to limit the risk of developing back pain. When lifting your baby try to get as close as possible, stand square on to your baby, gently bend your knees into small squat, and keep your back straight. Try to maintain an upright posture when feeding or carrying your baby.
