Plantar Fasciitis for Runners

Plantar Fasciitis for Runners

Plantar Fasciitis is a common foot injury that runners can experience, with approximately 15% of all running injuries affecting the feet. The plantar fascia is a thick elastic tissue stretching from the heel to the toes, stabilising the inner foot. Plantar fasciitis can cause pain/discomfort in the arch of the foot and/or underneath the heel. This condition can develop from multiple factors such as overtraining, vigorous hill workouts/speed training, muscle imbalance, wearing unsupportive footwear, and biomechanical factors.

Check out the leaflet below for further information regarding the symptoms, causes, management, and prevention of Plantar Fasciitis for runners, including exercises to help improve/prevent symptoms.
Plantar Fasciitis can take anywhere from 3-6 months to improve, sometimes up to 12 months if you are required to undertake frequent episodes of prolonged standing during your daily routine. Physiotherapy can be very effective in the management of Plantar Fasciitis to mobilise tight structures and progress strengthening/return to running. Acupuncture can also be beneficial for relieving symptoms.
Key Message:

Plantar Fasciitis is a common foot injury affecting runners, causing pain/discomfort, and reducing performance. It may require several months to heal and return to normal activity levels. Altering training patterns, choosing correct footwear, and strengthening specific muscles can enhance postural control and improve running biomechanics.
